Focus On The Few Areas Members Really Care About

December 20, 2018 By mark david mcCreary

A person trying to improve an online community surveyed more than 250 members to see what was important to the community. From this detailed survey he derived 19 top priorities. The problem was, that to make all 19 priorities a reality there would need to be an incredibly complex road map and plan. This person had the idea of improving an online community wrong. Instead of trying to be everything for everyone, focus on 2 or 3 areas that will positively affect the most people.

Key Takeaways:

  • If a community wants to succeed it reallyy should not try to be all things to all members.
  • One short-sighted, but well-meaning community builder actually going the time to interview 250 members.
  • After interviewing a dozen more members, the community builder devised an unrealistic 5 year plan to enact 19 things he found that members wanted.

“The purpose of doing the research isn’t to build an exhaustive list of everything members want and then try to do all those things. The purpose is to find out what are the top 2 to 3 things members really care about and excel in just those areas.”
