What Happens When Everyone Offers a Membership Model

September 13, 2018 By mark david mcCreary

Patreon has given individual creators and small businesses the kind of advanced membership tools and mechanics previously available mostly to larger enterprises. This is leading everyone from Youtube stars to up-and-coming musicians to pick up the Patreon model. Competitors to Patreon, such as Ko-Fi, Drip and others have also begun to proliferate. It suddenly feels like everybody is chasing after the Association business model, but with fewer upfront costs. This means that even small scale content creators may have hundreds or thousands of people giving them money. It?s a promising model, although as Patreon has found, managing a service provider to so many creative people can be like herding cats.

Key Takeaways:

  • Patreon provides individual creators and startups with advanced membership tools previously available only to well-resources associations.
  • Patreon means that even a lone musician, artist or designer can have hundreds or more members giving him/her money.
  • As Patreon?s user base has grown explosively, it has acquired companies like Kit while competitors have started to chase after the same user base.

“Associations have never had a monopoly on the concept of membership, but as it becomes more common online even for the smallest of creators (thanks, Patreon), now might be a good time to consider how to up your game?both with tech and strategy.”
