Stop Wasting Your Community Data, It’s Your Most Powerful Tool

February 11, 2019 By mark david mcCreary

Data analytics is a powerful tool which can be used to improve website community relationships. There are four levels of data analytics and these benchmarks can be used to measure the level of involvement in managing data resources. Level 0 is a minimal activity which involves simply adding metric data into a spreadsheet program. Level 1 requires more work on the user’s part, where multiple resources need to be used to update this data into a spreadsheet. Between Levels 1 and 2, there is actual analytical work that is needed to be performed, including the use of methodology to analyze what has caused the rise and fall of various metrics, like creating a decision tree, sourcing additional data, to find out why there is a reduction in posts made by members of a site. Levels 2 and 3 involves finding out how to fix any problems discovered during the analytical phase. Levels 3 and 4 involve the creation of a usable continuing process of problem finding and solving that can economize the process and allow for tactics that will cause a greater impact on issues found during the data analysis process.

Key Takeaways:

  • Many people would probably think their day is ruined if they are asked if they are measuring the right things.
  • If one doesn’t know what to do differently with the data when it goes up or down, then the collected data doesn’t matter.
  • As the most powerful tool in any community professional toolkit, data analysis should reveal what to stop doing, keep doing, and how to fix community problems.

“If you’re dropping monthly metrics into a big spreadsheet to send to your boss, you’re probably at level 0.”
