Patrick O’Keefe has followed the musician Ryan Leslie for many years, as somebody who understands community, not just social media. Ryan’s key point is to have your own platform for supporters, and don’t rely on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

I don’t care who you are, you need a support system. In fact, social media is a very weak support system and almost an artificial ego booster in terms of follow/notifications numbers.
