Private Messages – The Dark Underbelly of Communities

November 18, 2022 By mark david mcCreary

Private messages often become the dark underbelly of a community. It’s a place where members can get spammed and receive unwanted sexual advances or personal attacks.

Private messages started out as a great way to communicate privately. Now with most people online, there can also be a dark side involved with Private Messaging. It’s now a place that receives Spam, unwelcome or inappropriate conversations, angry messages, and even viruses.

Key Takeaways:

  • Private messages are private. It’s unlikely anyone will know of another’s issue with a private message unless the recipient reports the abuse. Encourage your members to report inappropriate messages.
  • As a community leader, you can restrict some potential for abuse by turning off private messaging. (But that defeats the purpose of an email discussion group!)
  • One way to assess where problems start? Track high-volume senders and recipients.
