URLs so Long They Reach the Sky

March 27, 2022 By mark david mcCreary

Emails can have tons of problems. 😕

They get caught in spam filters. Or are misformatted. Or possibly implode. (OK, maybe not.)

But here’s something you may not think of as a problem…..really, really, really long URLs. Find out why this is a problem and an easy solution.

Long URL Problem

Sometimes, They Can Break.

If you paste a long URL into your email and then it gets reformatted and squished, it may break in half. That means it won’t get translated into a clickable link.

So what should be this https:/mail-list.com/listserv-management-software/, ends up confusing people because it looks like this in their email:

https:/mail-list.com/
listserv-management-software/

They Take Up a LOT of Space

Even if they don’t break, long URLs are just that…..long.

And annoying.

The Long URL Solution

URL Shorteners

The typical solution for a long URL is a shortener tool like Bitly or TinyURL. Paste your URL in the browser, and it comes out with a short version.

For example, paste this:     https://mail-list.com/listserv-management-software/

And get this:     http://bit.ly/2he9k4q

Which is great! And very handy for sites like Twitter. The only problem is your reader can’t tell where the URL is going. It might lead to a virus, an infected website, etc. So, you have to hope they trust you.

Brackets

How do you keep your URLs whole without using a URL shortener? Well, if you don’t care about the look and just want to be sure it doesn’t break, put angle brackets around it instead. This signals to email software to not break the URL.
