How do you approach new community members?

Brew summarizes a recent My Community Manager Live Hangout about the important topic of getting new members involved.  And there are different ways of doing this, and it can depend greatly on the size and type of community.  Many good points summarized in this very brief blog post.

What he found is that people didn’t respond well when he was being too formal and he found better success with a bit of direct dialogue.
