Community In Name Only

August 19, 2019 By mark david mcCreary

Richard Millington has been working for a company called WeWork office for approximately a year, and while he is continuously surrounded by his coworkers, the word ‘community’ often takes on a different meaning with this particular position. There are no introductions, veteran employees, or rituals that they participate in, but there is still a sense of togetherness. This togetherness is formed by the presence of warm employees, as well as the occasional guest speaker that blesses them with their experiences.

Key Takeaways:

  • WeWork claims to foster a sense of community among its employees, but the company doesn’t always fulfill its promises.
  • WeWork could benefit from providing its employees with collaborative projects to break down the barriers between team members.
  • WeWork could also benefit from fostering introductions between older employees and newer employees, and developing office traditions among the staff members.

“Slapping a community label onto a project might raise it’s perceived value, but turning it into a genuine community collaboration will raise its real value.”
